Making Friends in U. K
Michael, University of Edinburgh

When I was at University, especially during the first two years, my life was quite relaxed. My University was not based on a campus, but was actually a part of the city of Edinburgh, so in a way, the city itself was my campus. This meant that I had I had everything that a city has to offer at my disposal: me and my friends did not have to go far to see movies, eat out at one of the many cafes or restaurants, or have drinks in one of the huge number of bars. It meant that everything, (my apartment, my study spaces, and the city), were all close enough together that it was not a big deal to move between the three of them, which made life pretty easy.

Personally, the friends that I made were those that I was lucky enough to live with during my first year, in a large apartment building provided by the university. We were all from different backgrounds and all studied indifferent fields, which obviously taught us a lot and made things pretty interesting. On top of that, though, I had friends that I met in different circumstances. Some of them would be from classes that we took together, others would be from societies within the university, (groups of people that come together to have fun because of interests or passions that they share). With so many young people around, you can meet people totally by chance, when you don’t even try or expect it; generally, people at university are pretty friendly and open. You could start talking to some outside a classroom and in a party and still be friends with them three years later.
